Yeah my name is Adam and I run Convulse Records and play in a hardcore band called Destiny Bond. Cloe and Amos also play in Destiny Bond and help me with the label. Cloe does a lot of graphic design work for it and Amos works directly with some of the bands and helps with mailorder. Young Nick was Convulse’s first volunteer, he plays in Sanitizers, The Clue, and Tender Object, and he does video work and helps with mailorder too. Taylor Stribrny also helps with video work and Quinn plays in Candy Apple and Asbestos and has just started doing some mailorder and design stuff. And my friend Ian from Militarie Gun and Regional Justice Center also helps out when he can with video and design stuff and working directly with artists. It’s a big volunteer team but it’s all people I trust very deeply and there are times when people’s schedules don’t leave much room for involvement so it’s good to have a rotating cast of people that pitch in to make it happen when they can. What have some of the biggest challenges been running Convulse over the years? Money and space. Money’s the obvious one. Convulse has pushed my personal finances to a place that’s probably bad to most people, most of the time. But that kind of comes with the territory, it’s not like a DIY punk label is always going to take care of itself financially. It’s gotten easier as the label has grown and its because people buy records and take the time to support us, which I don’t take for granted. Space is tough though, I live in a small apartment so we have to use storage units to do mailorder and keep inventory. They don’t have wifi or power so we have to do everything from a mobile hotspot in the hallway of the storage facility. Honesty with yourself and your bandmates about what you want to make and accomplish as a band. I think most bands fall apart because there’s a difference in expectations between the members. One person wants to play a million shows locally because they love drink tickets and their friends, one person wants to tour, one person just wants to record some songs and chill -- eventually everyone is annoyed and no one is excited to make stuff. So you have to start by finding people with the same goals. I also think setting your expectations very low in terms of how a project will be received and focusing on making something honest that you’re proud of is the best way to achieve longevity or even initial joy from a band. Too many people suffocate a band with weird expectations that suck the creative element out of a project before its realized, I’ve been guilty of it. I mean I could say buy merch and stuff but you all know that. Pouring whatever resources and time you have into our DIY venues probably goes the furthest to supporting artists. D3 and 7th Circle support artists the most in my experience. They make space for bands beyond what they’re capable of generating in bar sales or merch cuts. I love a lot of other venues in town, and will book shows with them, but at the end of the day, they’re only going to support bands that make them money. If we want young artists especially to figure things out, and we want smaller touring bands to come through, we have to keep those spaces open. So send them some money and get involved if you can. Yeah – it needs to be rooted in hardcore/punk. I love a lot of music but Convulse’ doesn’t mean Convulse needs to put out a prog record or something like that. Sometimes the connections to hardcore and punk come from the shows a band plays or how they present their band as much as it comes from sonic elements. They also need to exhibit care for respect for what they do and work hard touring or making and presenting their work, ideally both, but that can’t always happen which is understandable. Can you tell us a bit about how that relationship formed with Convulse? Yeah during COVID, Young Nick booked an online fest where bands just sent in videos of themselves, and he showed me a video of this band from Mississippi called MSPAINT that all wore hasmat suits – I was floored. We hit them up after that and said we wanted to do a record and asked them to come play Convulse Weekend in 2021. They called me up a lot in the runup to the fest and we just became friends. We’re both from the middle of nowhere to varying degrees and I think we just found out we had a lot in common and valued a lot of the same things. After they played here, they came back again right away, and it’s just been a close bond ever since. They’re an incredible band and incredible people and I’ll be shocked if they don’t take over the world soon. When we first met, Nick had been playing in bands for a long time, but I had never played in bands or written my own music, I had always just played guitar by myself. But after we met I was inspired to start writing my own music and the Yard Art sound was born. We couldn’t find musicians we wanted to work with in New Hampshire but when we came out here and found lots of like minded musicians we were finally able to form a band. Actually our first drummer for this project (under a different name) was Brian Rossi who is now the drummer for Rugburn! He was the first musician we met out here and it was during the pandemic so we used to all practice in his basement with masks on. We love you Brian! Caitlyn: Approach to Anima by Maya Ongaku – I love listening to this while I work, it makes my brain feel good I’ve been exploring Alice Coltrane’s work and I particularly like The Elements which she made with Joe Henderson. Great music for bouncing around the kitchen making pancakes on Sunday morning. I’ve also been getting into later Leonard Cohen (I’m already obsessed with his earlier stuff, particularly his first album). His later stuff is more darkly funny and I’m into it. Nick: Ambient 3: A Day of Radiance by Laraaji and Brian Eno – I really like the subtle changes over long songs and its really brought out by the production style. Good music for working Pish by The Brian Jonestown Massacre – I got into them a while back but really only listened to a few albums. I really like the vocal style on the album especially the first track Pish. The harmonies move around a lot instead of staying a certain spacing apart (eg a 3rd or a 5th) and it almost reminds me of choral music in that way. Nick: Promotion and things like that was very difficult at first. We personally did not post on social media often when we started Yard Art and were so far out of the loop on stuff like that. We even made a Facebook page for Yard Art before an Instagram LOL. We’ve figured that out a bit now though and are learning all the time and figuring out ways to make it less time consuming. The most rewarding thing for us has been finding a community. We’ve made a lot of friends and have picked up some really cool things from musicians in the scene. Caitlyn: That there’s no such thing as an aspiring artist, if you’re making the original art/music/poems/whatever, whether you share it with tons of people or whether you’re the only person who gets to enjoy it, you’re an artist and nobody can take that away. Making art is therapeutic, it can help you understand yourself better, and taking in other people’s art helps us understand other people’s inner worlds, experiences, and points of view. For those of us who share our art forms on the internet, we feel the pressure of the eyes of entire world and it can make us want to shrink ourselves and make our art shallow and palatable to appeal to as many people as possible. However, music/art that is just designed to be immediately familiar and easily consumable is degrading to a very important, very human activity. So my advice to everyone is to tell the truth as you see it in your own voice, make it as ugly and weird as it needs to be, and please share it if feel called to do that. Nick: For guitars my workhorse is a Hagstrom Viking semi hollow and for some of the more psychy songs I play a Reverend Airwaves 12 string. My pedal board is somewhat of a revolving door but my staples are an Akai analog delay, a BOSS DD7 set to reverse delay, a MXR Phase 95 pedal set at 9 o’clock, a JHS Unicorn vibrato pedal and a EHX Superego that is set to latch with its own EHX Small Stone phaser. I use the Superego a lot on some of our dronier songs and is what is making the drones on a few songs from our record that came out last year. Caitlyn: I’m pretty basic! I usually don’t use pedals, I kinda love the way my amp sounds so I’ll play directly into that, I have the same amp as Nick does. I play a pretty gold Gretsch Electromatic that unfortunately has a few nicks in it from dog-related accidents. Or, tell me about the worst gig you’ve ever played. My first *real* gig was at a bowling alley in Pensacola, Florida called Oops Alley with my band Sour!. We played for two or three hours, but we had 8 songs. So we played the 8 songs over and over again. We were like maybe 15. It wasn’t our worst gig but it was really something lol. How does the music scene in Denver compare to the scene that you're used to in Florida? Everybody knows each other in Florida. And there’s a LOT of fundraiser shows, which is great for small organizations but can be hard for artists getting their start, you might end up playing like, mostly fundraisers for your first bunch of shows. In stark contrast, I was paid for my very first gig out here. There’s an incredible age to the FL scene too, though. Everybody goes to, went to, or has been to 309. There’s longevity to the Pensacola punk scene. That house has been around since before I was born. The Pensacola Punk scene raised me and a lot of the people I know and love. I think every scene deserves that longevity. In both scenes, I believe there’s the kinship, and a good safe space for queer artists. I didn’t know anyone when I moved to Denver, and then the pandemic happened. I spent two years depressed in my apartment doing Team Nonexistent solo. The comeback has been so insane. Magic, Billie, n Jesse, changed my life. I’m so lucky to have them. If it wasn’t for them I’d probably have given up n left Denver. I love them so much, and having their love, support, time, and company is my greatest accomplishment. What’s been on constant repeat for you this year? “People just need to hear your music.” What advice do you have for other aspiring musicians out there? Put. Out. Music. Just literally do it. I think I say this every single time I’m asked this question. Please just do it. I want to hear your art. I want you to make art. There’s so many anxious artists with cruddy equipment who are probably sitting on the sickest demo and are too scared to put it out. Please just do it I’m begging you.
